Los buques de guerra anclados en el puerto fueron fácil blanco para los aproximadamente 360 aviones de guerra japoneses que participaron en el ataque. Los norteamericanos sufrieron 3400 bajas con 2300 muertes. El ataque dañó seriamente el poder naval y aéreo norteamericano en el Pacífico.

Sin embargo, esta agresión galvanizó al pueblo norteamericano y Roosevelt consiguió que al día siguiente, el 8 de diciembre de 1941, el Congreso aprobara la declaración de guerra contra Japón.

La falta de previsión de las autoridades militares ante un eventual ataque provocó duras críticas en aquel momento. On December 7, 1941 Japanese aircraft attacked by surprise the naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii where the US fleet in the Pacific war was concentrated.

Warships anchored in the harbor were easy targets for about 360 Japanese warplanes participated in the attack.
